Groceries and liqour

If you’re doing a bigger shopping for breakfast, snacks ect, I recommend to go to Lidl. If you buy only couple of beers and some basics Billa is fine as well and it’s closer. Go to Old town supermarket only if these 2 are closed as it’s super small grocery shop with limited sortiment.

  • Try beer Zlatý Bažant 73′, it’s old fashioned Slovakia’s famous pilsner beer (Something between Pilsner Urquell and Belgian smoother beers).
  • Try “Chateau Topolčianky – Moravský muškát” vine
  • Try Borovička spirit if you like vodka, it’s similar kind but has coniferous taste
  • Try Tatra tea if you like herbal-like liquers, they are super strong and tasty (I recommend original 52%)
  • Some locally famous snacks are “kukuričné chrumky arašidové” a “horalka” (both have peanuts), make sure you try some of cheeses we specialize in like “syrové korbáče”, “syrové nite”, “syrová parenica” – all goes well with wine (or beer:)

Restaurants

I find tripadvisor’s recommendations for mid-range and fine dining pretty consistent with my experience so take a look there. I also share some of my recommendations here:

Most places cook until 9 pm, so if you’re hungry after that you can go to McDonalds or Kuskus Fast Food which is open up to 2 am, or try delivery App Bolt Food. During the day I recommend Slovak Pub, it’s a good priced restaurant serving local cuisine frequented not only by tourists but also locals. If you are looking for even more budget option, my favourite nearby is restaurant Divný Janko – they make good quality food for low range prices (one of the best price/value ratio in old town I know). If you like crepes make sure you go to Pan Cakes, they make delicious crepes (sweet and savory), we like go there for breakfast. You wouldn’t make a bad choice with Meštiansky pivovar neither, it’s a bit fancier but still reasonable priced local restaurant – they brew they own beer, it’s located inside a historical building and it’s usually a packed place despite having lots of tables.

  • Try “Halušky”, it’s a Slovak national dish that consists of potato dumplings combined with cheese sheep curds and fried bacon.
  • Unusually popular and typical slovak food is “Vyprážaný syr s hranolkami a tatarskou”, it’s fried cheese with fries and tatar sauce
  • As our culture is strongly influenced by neighbor countries we make really good “Sviečková” which is originally from Czechia, or “Szeged goulash” from Hungary. My favourite is also “Kačica s kapustou a lokšami” which is duck.

Shopping, bars & others

I don’t have strong opinion about these so better to visitbratislava.com
